I need to vent about licensing.

First things first.. I have ZERO problems paying for software and services that are worth the money. My issue is with companies taking advantage of small businesses with draconian, backwards and very shady licensing terms.

I spoke with a client who wants to upgrade the server that run his security cameras. The server it's running on is getting a little aged, needs more ram/hdd/etc, but being a single core P4, it's not worth it. I called the software vendor for instructions on migrating it to new hardware and was told that.. Sorry! The serial key is tied to the MAC ADDRESS of the server's NIC (which is on-board), and to generate a new key for the new server would take 48 hours and $250.

Yes I can clone the mac address, but that's not the point.. I would almost understand if they said it was locked to the machine ala MS OEM licenses (which I also despise), but to tie a license to a single component which is quite likely to be change/upgraded/duplicated/die while leaving the system otherwise in perfect working order is just ludicrous..

Needless to say, I spent the next couple hours testing out various open source solutions. iSpy seems to fit the bill and while is not the quickest or easiest to configure, it is more flexible and feature rich and won't try to screw us out of extra money for no reason.

For the record: I am an MSP, and had absolutely nothing to do with the initial purchase of the system or software.

Edit: Wow, I can't believe the response. I'm certainly glad that I'm not the only one who hates predatory licensing. I am surprised at how common MAC address based licensing is though. I can only hope that given time things will change.
