Today we have a behind-the-scenes look at how Art Director Kathleen Oudit shot and created the cover of Since You’ve Been Gone by Anouska Knight, a moving story about learning to embrace an unknown and unexpected tomorrow–and how to love again.

The photographer, Henrieta, and I met at the studio many hours before the model arrived. A wall of the photography studio had been already been painted and shelves mounted to create a “cake shop” set.

Thanks to Le Dolci, of Toronto, Ontario we had almost an entire bakery’s worth of cakes for our photo shoot!

This local pastry and cake boutique delivered a colourful selection of showstopping cakes, cake stands and platters for us to work with. We also had a selection of character appropriate clothes (including some sweet aprons) waiting to wardrobe our model.

The cakes looked delicious, but don’t be fooled… they are all display models; just icing and fondant over styrofoam forms. Cake chefs create these samples to display thier creative designs in a showroom or store window–but unlike cake, Styrofoam will not go “off” after a few days.

It also makes the cakes light enough for us to move around easily without danger of them splitting or cracking. And I am sure our model appreciated that when she had to hold a cake at eye level for over an hour!

Henrietta and I spent the morning placing the cakes on the shelves and shooting them in various arrangements. This allowed us to experiment and find a pleasing arrangement of colour and heights. The we also took photos of individual cakes so that when we put the final cover illustration together we could move or replace cakes in the scene as needed.

We then cleared the set of all cakes and prepared to photograph the model. We photographed her in multiple outfits, and even changed her hairstyle–and of course we tried many variations on how she held the cake before her face. We took over 500 shots from which we had to select just one!

It is when we begin to assemble all the components together in Photoshop that we can finally determine the most effective cover scene. For example: the polka-dotted apron looked charming at the photo shoot but made your eyes cross when we tried to put the title type over it.

Or, the comfy sweater and neutral colours which were faithful to the author’s character description, just looked unattractive as a cover image.

This simple scene is the result of hours of carefully choreographed hand positions, colour, type…and cake wrangling!
